In Such a Night (Skit)

[A dimly lit bridge on a cold evening. Stars twinkle in the sky and the sound of water flowing can be heard beneath. DEMERTIS stands at the edge of the bridge, a cloak covered most of his face, staring straight ahead. He speaks softly to himself.]

DEMERTIS: In such a night, shadows seemed to bend yet no light seems to escape from the moon. Just a man I am, with trembling hands and thoughts so deep, do I pour out my feelings for you to keep. Rather I stand here but sleep. Where is she oh where is she?

[PEGULA enters and joins him on the bridge with a cloak which casts shadows on her face.]

PEGULA: In such a night, the moon lays low on the horizon.

DEMERTIS: In such a night, the moon seems nowhere to be found yet stands beside me in this very night.

PEGULA: In such a night my lips are to betray me on something my heart desperately tried to break through but my mind had forbidden.

DEMERTIS: In such a night, words can't scratch the surface of the demons inside. But I must try.

[PEGULA turns to face him.]

PEGULA: How poetic you are.

DEMERTIS: How can I not when inspiration isn't very far.

PERGULA: [turns to face the bridge. Her voice is softer] If only a union between us wasn't so impossible.

DEMERTIS: But what if we defy them?

PEGULA: Our duties define us. The weight of our crowns eats me alive and I know it does you to.

DEMERTIS:[determined] Rather I be a mere commoner with you than an heir without you.

PEGULA: And I rather live in peril than to live another day not by your side.

DEMERTIS:[puts his hand on hers in a haste] Then let's go!

PEGULA:[hesitant] But the world outside our cage is unforgiving.

DEMERTIS: Then what if it's not worth living for?

PEGULA:[confused] How do you mean?

DEMERTIS: [puts his freehand on his stomach] I can feel it inside. A place free from all this pain and bitter judgement.

PEGULA: This place sounds almost magical. But what if it is just a dream?

DEMERTIS: Not a dream a but a promise to you. That I will be by your side, forever. Are you ready?

[PEGULA stays quiet]

PEGULA: Have I ever been?
